Every summer, YMCA Camp Oakes provides the experience of a lifetime for nearly 3,300 campers and, year-in-total, will serve about 11,000 people.

Camp Ohr Lanu

 

Camp Ohr LanuCamp Ohr Lanu is designed to bring Jewish families together for a retreat of study, prayer, respite, support and fun in the beautiful hills of the Ojai Valley.

Children with special needs ages 4 to 14, along with their parents and siblings, will enjoy specialized, therapeutic programming in a supportive environment. Ohr Lanu’s warm, caring staff includes trained special educators, behavior and family education specialist, and individual counselors paired with each family.

Each special needs child will choose a focus – dance, music, art or drama-facilitated by a trained therapist in that area. Siblings will participate in their own group activities, helping create bonds in a supportive environment. Parents will engage in texts, networking and relaxation.

Together families will enjoy everything Camp Ramah offers: an Olympic size swimming pool, ropes course, hiking trails and more.

Camping Unlimited – Camp Krem

Camping Unlimited - Camp KremCamp Krem enriches the lives of those with special needs, counselors and volunteers through fun and safe programs of recreation, socialization and education.  They thrive through understanding, acceptance and support from the communities they serve.

Campers of all disabilities are welcome at Camp Krem. Campers who typically attend experience symptoms of Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Asperger Sydrome, ADHD and other physical, emotional and developmental disabilities. Camp Krem offers summer camp opportunities for children age 5 and older, plus summer camp sessions for adults.

Their Summer Program provides a 1:3 staff ratio, and offers three options for adventure, Main Camp, Outdoor Adventure Camp and Travel Camp. They offer a range of activities and duration, so you are sure to find a camp that best suits your needs. They offer 6 summer sessions from June through August.  Signing up is easy using their on-line application process.

Casa ColinaFor more than 25 years, the Casa Colina Outdoor Adventures program has provided therapeutic outdoor experiences to thousands of people with disabilities.

The Outdoor Adventures Program focuses on empowering people with disabilities by creating opportunities through challenging and exciting activities. By focusing on abilities, not disabilities, the program enables its members to experience success both physically and emotionally. These recreation programs utilize the natural world to create unique opportunities where people with disabilities can:

Drama Kings and Queens

LA Speech and Language Center

DKQ Camp at the Los Angeles Speech and Language Therapy Center, is a 6 week long summer program where students work on developing communication skills, social pragmatic skills, and acting abilities through creating an amazing musical performance in a professional theatre at the end of camp.

Each day campers are exposed to acting, dancing, singing, set creation and costume design. Camp schedule includes a weekly field trip that corresponds with themes. Field trips previous years include personal meet and greet and tour at CBS studios, UCLA School of Theatre visit, Universal Studios, and Los Angeles Orchestra Festival.

This camp is designed to develop and/or increase language abilities, social interaction skills, general awareness and self confidence. While all students are considered, ideal campers have some established communication system, able to follow instruction and have minimal maladaptive behaviors.

Easter Seals Camp

Easter Seals CampEaster Seals’ camps offer children and adults with disabilities the same excitement and activities available at other camps.

For over 40 years, campers and volunteers from all walks of life have come together for one magical week of camp. Activities include crafts, hayrides, talent shows, dances, swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, archery, hiking, concerts, storytelling, and a high and low ropes course.

Easter Seals Camp is a week-long resident camp serving children and adults in the San Bernardino Mountains.  It is held at Camp Oakes, an accredited American Camping Association site.

    • The camp is co-ed and campers must have some communication skills
    • The counselor to camper ratio is approximately 1:2.
    • Campers stay in dormitories or 3-sided cabins
    • Restrooms and showers are available
    • A registered nurse is on 24-hour dut
    • Camp elevation is 7,300 feet
    • Easter Seals provides a subsidy, but there is a fee to attend.  Partial camperships are available.

EQUIP: Equine-Assisted Activities and Therapies

Equip Equine TherapyEQUIP is hosted by the beautiful Rocking T Ranch in Yorba Linda, California. The facilities provide a cozy, rustic ranch setting where clients can grow and develop in a positive environment. Safety is paramount, and the finest of horses (schoolmasters) are used.

The program was founded by Gary Mullen, Ed.D., who developed two other such programs in University settings. Executive Director Jim Tice and Maggie Kehrer, a Path International instructor, provide lessons to meet the unique needs of each client. Every lesson incorporates ground activities as well as mounted activities. Interaction with the farm animals is incorporated into the tail end of many sessions. The client experience is intended to be therapeutic at many levels.

Therapeutic riding offers a number of physical, social, cognitive, educational and behavioral benefits.

Persons with disabilities such as Autism, ADD, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Rhetts Syndrome, Visual Impairments, Hearing Impairments, Social, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders have experienced benefits from therapeutic riding.

Help Group – Kids Like Me Camps

Help Group Kids Like MeThe Help Group’s Kids Like Me program conducts four unique camps, each one specifically designed to address varying ages, abilities and needs of children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental challenges. The four camp programs create exciting opportunities for children and teens to engage, experience and explore.

Village Glen Day Camp is a unique, specialized social skills camp for children ages 3-13 with Asperger’s Disorder, high-functioning Autism, and related social challenges. Experienced Help Group therapists and counselors facilitate a fun, creative, and enriching camp program that promotes skills development in areas critical to social growth and building friendships.

Camp Sunshine is a popular program developed for children between the ages of 3 and 21 who have moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder and other special needs. A multidisciplinary team of professionals oversees a creative summer program designed to help each child reach his or her highest potential and develop unique strengths and abilities. Campers are grouped by age and ability and maintain a 1:3 counselor to camper ratio to maximize individual attention.

Camp Discovery is a one week only day camp adventure at the exciting Tumbleweed Day Camp site for children ages 4-13 with mild to moderate special needs. An exceptional staff team helps young campers safely explore, experience, and enjoy a wide variety of fun, traditional outdoor camp and nature activities.

Teens on the Go is a unique weekly social skills camp designed especially for teens ages 13-18 with Asperger’s Disorder, high functioning Autism, and related social challenges. Lead by highly trained Help Group therapists, this special summer program features daily trips, activities, and adventures with peers throughout Los Angeles.

Teens on the Go Travel Camps are 6 day, 5 night fun-filled adventures for teens ages 13-18 with Asperger’s Disorder, high functioning Autism, and related social challenges.  Professional Help Group staff facilitates these exciting trips where teens visit and explore different cities each summer. Each trip provides a true bonding experience for participants creating memories to last a lifetime
