Camp Paivika opened in 1947 as one of the first fully accessible camps in the United States, and operates under a special use permit granted by the San Bernardino National Forest. Located in the beautiful San Bernardino National Forest, the camp is fully accredited by the American Camp Association.

Our programs allow campers to make friends, try new things and become more confident. Families are often surprised to find loved ones returning home with a new, can-do spirit, independently choosing clothes for the day, tying their shoes or brushing their teeth without assistance. And, of course, families appreciate the respite they can take from the rigors and challenges of providing 24/7 care.

Camp Paivika is completely accessible and capable of accommodating individuals who use wheelchairs, walkers or other adaptive devices. Staff are trained and prepared to provide personal care as needed including caring for individuals who are incontinent and who require assistance with transferring, bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding and other personal care.

AHEAD With Horses

Ahead With Horses

AHEAD WITH HORSES has an over 45-year history of providing unique, highly motivating and effective therapy, education and recreation through horses and related experiences to disabled, disadvantaged, at-risk and special-needs children and has earned recognition educationally, medically and scientifically.  Through vaulting (gymnastics on a moving horse), even severely disabled children learn and achieve with the goal of enabling them to lead more independent and productive lives.

Two unique aspects of equine therapy offered at AWH are the immediacy or response and visibility of its effectiveness across various areas.

PHYSICALLY: AWH takes children with disabilities through a complex series of movements while the horse rhythmically moves the body in a manner similar to the human gait. This improves the children’s posture, balance and muscle control.

MENTALLY: AWH increases concentration, improves sequential thoughts and helps children learn to speak and develop spatial awareness.

EMOTIONALLY: AWH provides the opportunity for children to bond with the horse, instructors and volunteers, building confidence and trust. Contact with the horse and vaulting provides a non-competitive setting for learning where the children develop self-discipline and improve concentration. Most importantly, the sheer sense of joy raises their spirits and brings smiles to their faces

SOCIALLY: AWH nurtures a positive self-image. For the first time in their lives, children with sever disabilities often experience a sense of independence.

AWH serves children throughout the Los Angeles area. These are disabilities including—but not limited to:

  • Autism/Autism Spectrum
  • Down syndrome
  • Cognitive Disabilities
  • Developmental Delays
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Spina Bifida
  • Congenital Disabilities
  • Chromosome Disorders
